At the end of World War II, Frank Cozzi Sr. and his brothers started out in the “junk” business, peddling the alleys on the west side of Chicago in search of newspapers and rags that could be sold for cash. But in the 1960s, Frank Sr.’s son Albert had a different idea for the future of the company. Albert began soliciting manufacturing companies that used metals in their fabrication processes to buy the excess metal they generated. Frank Cozzi and Sons Junk Yard had become Cozzi Iron & Metal, Inc.

By 1980, Cozzi Iron & Metal had grown to $20 million a year in sales, all from the sole company facility in Chicago. Under the leadership of Albert and his brothers Frank and Greg, the business grew rapidly through internal organic growth and acquisitions. By 1997, Cozzi Iron & Metal had operations in Chicago, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Arizona; it employed 500 people and generated gross annual sales of $250 million.

Through the hard work and business savvy of the Cozzi family, Cozzi Iron & Metal, Inc. became one of the most respected metal operations in the U.S. and was eventually sold to Metal Management where Albert served as CEO, leading the publicly traded company to significant revenue and stock value increases.
